Different Laser-assisted Refractive Vision Correction Procedures
With the advancement of laser technology, refractive vision correction was revolutionized immensely. Today, there are many laser vision correction procedurs performed each and every day- mosre often than not producing favorable results to happy patients. Some of these popular procedures are Lasik (normal, Intralase, and custom Lasik), LASEK, EpiLasik, and monovision Lasik.
The only difference between standard and Intralase Lasik prodedurs is the apparatus used to create the corneal flap, which is the first step in every Lasik procedure. Normal Lasik procedures use a mechanical microkeratome to create the flap while IntraLase Lasik uses a laser to do the same. The latter is said to avoid complications more than normal Lasik. Custom Lasik on the other hand utilizes wavefront technology to precisely guide the Excimer Laser on excising the corneal stroma resulting to a more successful, more complication-free Lasik procedure.
Other laser vision correction procedures are LASEK and Epilasik. The two are very similar to Lasik only that they use a totally different method to create the flap. LASEK uses alcohol to strip the outer most layer of the eyeball, which is the epithelium. This procedure is controversial as the alcohol can kill epithelial cells that may not re-grow. It’s only advisable to people with thin epithelium. Epilasik on the other hand uses a blunt plastic to create the epithelial flap. But this technique is not suitable to people with high degree of myopia.
The monovision Lasik on the other hand is any normal or Intralase Lasik, LASEK, or Epilasik procedure. However, it’s targeted to create one focus on the dominant eye and another focus on the non-dominant eye. The dominant eye is set to see distant objects while the non-dominant eye is set to see near objects. Monovision Lasik is advisable to people 40 years and older who suffer a condition called presbyopia.
These are some of the most common laser vision correction performed nowadays. Only your eye doctor, after a thorough examination of your vision condition, can advice which procedure is the most suited for you. Always make sure, however, that the doctor you consult is experienced in the field of laser vision correction to avoid possible complications.
