When a person reaches the age of 40 to 50 years old, he or she is prone to develop a vision problem called presbyopia. You know you have this condition when you are having difficulty to see either distant or near objects- you have trouble focusing. If you have this condition and you are 40 years old or more, you are a good candidate for monovision Lasik vision correction.
Monovision Lasik vision correction involves correcting the dominant eye for farsightedness and the other eye for near sightedness. Yes, that is right. One of your eyes is set to see far objects well while the other is corrected to see near objects well. You might want to ask if this can produce vision confusion. At first it will. A successful monovision lasik procedure can free the patient from correction glasses dependency. You can use your dominant eye to see far objects, and use the other eye to see near objects.
The reliability of monovision eye surgery had been questioned until the FDA approved the procedure fairly recently, in July of 2007. Now, many eye surgeons are prescribing the operation to their patients over 40 years old to free them from using bifocal correction glasses.
If you are over 40 years old and you are planning to have Lasik surgery to correct your vision, be sure to ask your eye doctor if you qualify for monovision Lasik correction. You may pay more than the normal Lasik procedure but the benefits you get afterwards are worth it.
